Facebook Launches Venue, a New Companion For Live Events

Facebook’s New Product Experimentation (NPE) team has launched a new experimental app called Venue. The app aims to provide an interactive second-screen experience for live events. The application is available for both iOS and Android users in the US.

Facebook will first test Venue with NASCAR`s Food City presenting the Supermarket Heroes 500 race on May 31. From the features sets, it looks Facebook is computing with twitter here which is currently the main “second screen” platform for commenting on live events and engaging with fellow fans.

In twitter, people join a conversation by tweeting along using a hashtag. Venue is a much more curated experience. Commentary will mainly come from select expert commentators such as journalists or athletes. Commentators can set up Moments to engage with viewers. Fans receive a notification whenever a Moment is created for the event. This will allow fans to instantly search the important moments in an event, according to the company.
